  • South Higgins Lake State Park, Michigan

This was our first time at Higgins Lake and we were very impressed, will definitely be going back! As usual we had no problem fitting our 38 footer into a site labeled for "up to 35 feet", tons of extra room. The 30AMP electrical worked well and the place was very clean despite the major construction going on. The entire place is being paved and major improvements are happening to the boat launch, scheduled to be done in time for the 4th of July weekend. There is a nice store by the boat launch with hot food, ice cream, cold drinks, supplies and souvenirs.

Nibbles Ice Cream is on the main road just up from the park entrance. The main road has a nice shoulder but is busy and fast but there is a path (shortcut) from in the park so you can easily walk or bike right from your campsite without going on the main road. Not only is it a great location but a really cool little place with GREAT ice cream, lots of variety and lots of outdoor seating.

One thing to note about this park is that the water spigots located throughout the park have a special spout thingy on them that won't allow you to hook up a hose, even with one of those rubber attachments for hooking up to damaged faucets. They obviously don't want you hooking up to fill your fresh water tank! We usually try to get a site close to a spigot in case we need to refill. This is the first place we've run into this. There are a handful of full hookup sites but I'm guessing those are very hard to acquire.

Summary: The lake is beautiful, the many beaches are really nice, the bike/walk path along the lake is awesome, the marina is nice, the mountain bike/hike trails across the road around Marl lake are nice but a bit limited.

Bottom Line: We highly recommend this park!

Cool sunset video over Higgins Lake. This is not taken at the State Park but the view from the South Higgins State Park is similar.
